If you are going to make 20 Apple pies then it is best that you have all of the ingredients in front of you; apples, flour, sugar, measuring cups, spoons, and pie tins as well as a preheated oven, the most important ingredient being, the recipe card so you can convert the recipe. All of this, is Mice en Place; everything in its place and everything has a place. This philosophy is used for every cooking process.

So how does it all apply to Internet Funnel Marketing? (Notice-I interchange the words Funnel and Marketing, because a Funnel is a Funnel)

In a 2 year span I have spent several thousand dollars in an attempt to find the most effective Internet business model for me. I purchased one money making program that guaranteed success overnight; "Just plug into our system and let it work for you" (It slices, it dices, oh please!).

Then there was money to be made filling out surveys, (Oh! Did I say that I made money filling out surveys? No! No! They made the money off me). I finally started finding legitimate businesses, but was unable to do anything with them because there were just too many missing pieces and loose ends; meaning that I had to continue to spend money on other services that they failed to mention in their so called "Complete Internet Business System".

So, "Mice en Place", I say. That's Right! Mice en Place! If Mice en Place had been used to develop these business models it would all have been available to me "HERE!" and "RIGHT NOW!" or at least the concept would have been more complete; or at least my understanding of it would have been more solidified, or fortified (Sorry! I had to use another cooking term).

So, there is a term that is very similar to my cooking term. It's called the Internet Marketing Funnel; a philosophy just like Mice en Place. Internet Funnel Marketing does not boast being a complete business and there are no step by step directions to follow either. So what good is it Chef?

I will describe it without the use of a drawing; or will I? Both Mice en Place and Internet Funnel Marketing resemble a funnel; hence the name. In cooking all the ingredients are brought together and placed into a funnel (not literal); the ingredients are gathered, assembly is required, the product is baked, and then finished. (Fig A)

The Internet Marketing Funnel is similar; (Fig B) Customers are offered complimentary products for visiting your site then invited on board for a stay to gain insight to the other products and services that you have to offer. There is nothing scary going on here, you don't fall into a deep hole. Most Internet Businesses don't give you this opportunity as you're told that you'll rake it in, even when you sleep; that's the hole that you don't want to fall into.

The funnel concept is wonderful because the more you climb inside, the more you learn about the Company and Its benefits; you also build better relations, better rapport with each other.

Why Strategic Marketing

Now, online marketing is evolving into a BIG thing for sure and there are still many people out there who are at a loss of what to do in engaging the online community. So, what many of us tend to do is to just jump onto the bandwagon and go with the flow, with most of us not knowing exactly what we are doing and why we are doing what we do! (This means starting a website or a blogshop, and then erm… starting a facebook page? And later… getting a twitter account? And probably throw some cash into google adwords or facebook advertising… oh, not forgetting advertisements on magazines or trying to get onto a newspaper page… and yes, many more. And by the end of it all, be still frustrated that visitors count is good and fans are there but money from sales is not.) Yet, STRATEGY becomes the ever-important word in today's marketing plans â€" yes, all the way from top brands down to new brands including you if you are an online seller. Why? This is the reason â€" while many people are starting blogshops to sell ANYTHING under the sky just because it is a low cost startup, many products and brands are losing their differentiation edge. In a summarised business dictionary, there are only 2 terms that bring in business â€" Differentiate and Low Price. You must choose either path. Well, of course if you choose to have both, you win the final trophy. But either one will bring you business. Do you want to beat price down? I bet not. It's suicidal. Let me just repeat â€" An attempt to beat your competitors' price down in a product market is  a suicidal move. You end up perishing together. Your customers have the last laugh from a good bargain but might not return to buy from you again once they find another seller who charges even cheaper. So, in RUNAWAY's summarised business dictionary then, we must dictate that there is only one path â€" Differentiation. And differentiation demands STRATEGY.

Marketing is a difficult thing, yes. Many of us who are online sellers have more passion in product sourcing, product creation or even product selling. But marketing seems to just be the last thing on our minds when it really really should be the most important thing because without marketing, nothing sells. And when nothing sells, we should stop sourcing or making anything. That is why many blogshops today end up shutting down in disappointment. Not that they have inferior products or bad business luck, it's only a matter of understanding marketing.

Getting to what matters â€" the 4Ps: Product, Promotion, Price, Place. Let's just stash in another P â€" Participation (Credits to Prof Jikyeong Kang) For this blog entry, let's talk about Product first.

Product

In strategic marketing, product means your product pictures, descriptions and erm, yes, the product itself. First RUNAWAY Commandmant: Thou shalt not lie to your customers! Why? Because you don't want to earn only profits from selling one product and have one person hate you enough to announce to all her friends on facebook or any other forums that you cheated her of her money and to stop buying from you (Esp if this person is highly expressive and has a whole dictionary of vocabulary in her head to use on you). Inconsistency, lying, cheating and all bad behaviors tarnish your reputation straight away and don't imagine you can get off scot free. You may be able to do that 10 years ago, but the environment is clearly different today. We are looking at smart shoppers who know what they want, and even the less smart ones have been cheated enough to know what to do with you if you end up cheating them. So, product picture integrity must be there. Now comes that very thin 1mm line between product picture integrity and a nice picture for good marketing. As an online seller, you need to discern and make the final call on what to reveal and what else is better left for further imagination. Sometimes, a lack of information can deter buyers from buying but many times, too much information can also affect  buyers' decisions in a negative way. Yet, these excess information must be information that, if not revealed to the buyer, will not result in any frustrations or anger upon purchase. We do understand, however, that we face different kinds of buyers everyday. So, if a lack of information results in any unexpected complaints later on, the rule of thumb is â€" BE NICE. In an industry where there are many easily offended, frustrated and impatient online sellers, don't be surprised but one way to differentiate is to be the nicest person around. =) People will not only come back to you, they love you enough to tell their friends about you. That's business, isn't ! it?

What makes a nice product picture? For product clarity, you might want to invest in a good camera, so that when you zoom into the picture, you can actually see the material type â€" this makes the picture real to the online shopper, the shopper can imagine herself touching the product and knowing how it feels like! On background, there are many schools of thoughts. Some people totally detest the use of white background, but for RUNAWAY, we believe that a white background is still the safest option, and definitely most flexible, especially if you are planning to post on multiple sites for publicity (which you SHOULD). It is also useful to know some photo editting techniques so that adjustments may be made if you do not have good lighting. Of course, using a light tent or mini photo studio is still the best option for easy editting later on.

A good product picture arouses enough interest to have shoppers click on that product. A well written product description can get the shopper clicking on "Add to Shopping Cart" faster than a product without much descriptions. Many people are capable of wording clear functional aspects of the products, eg. size, color, how to wash, how to wear, how to use, etc. But the differentiating factor will be emotional descriptions that your shoppers can relate to. Most, if not all, people today make emotional buying decisions. Why do certain brands sell better than others even though they are priced much higher? Why do big brands go after celebrity endorsements? Why do people wear Nike? If we remove the tick on a Nike apparel and try to sell it to you without telling you it's a Nike apparel, would you still pay the same price to buy it? We all adore brands, but definitely not any brand. Having a brand is not the important part. It's creating a personality for that brand, such that it relates to the buyer. Another way to put it â€" humanise your product. Personify it. Turn it into your shopper's friend, at best. And price becomes the lesser factor. When someone buys something because she can relate emotionally to it, this thing increases in its significance to the buyer. It becomes all the more worthwhile to spend a little more on this item. During my nearly 29 years of network marketing, I've selected the wrong company a number of times. Not that the company was bad, although there were a few that were, but rather they weren't a good fit for me. Even if a company is growing rapidly, has an amazing product, solid compensation plan, and great marketing materials, it doesn't mean that it's right for everyone. The questions you have to ask are: Does the company have the same values as mine? Are they marketing in a way that is suitable to my personality? Do they offer a product or service that I can get passionate about? Is the compensation plan suited to my abilities, time commitment, and talents? Once you answer these and other questions, you will have a better feel for whether a company is right for you and although selecting the right company doesn't guarantee success, it does drastically increase the odds. The key is to do your due diligence and make a good selection.

 

Power Secret Two: Pick the Right Sponsor

 

One of the biggest mistakes I see made in network marketing is picking the wrong sponsor. Typically one of two things happens. Either a person gets sponsored by a friend, family member, or associate, who doesn't know anything more about building a successful network marketing business than they do. The second option usually happens after a bad experience with the first option and so they begin researching to find a big hitter to sponsor them. The problem with being sponsored by a big hitter is that they don't always have time to work closely with new people. After all they probably have thousands of people in their network, all needing some level of attention. The key here is to be sponsored by someone who is serious about building a big business and is willing to dedicate the time to help you succeed. It's also important that your sponsor have similar values and be someone you would enjoy working with very closely. Again, picking the right sponsor doesn't guarantee success, but it sure helps.

 

Power Secret Three: Develop Purpose, Goals, and Objectives

 

Over the years I've trained and coached tens of thousands of network marketers and have found that most don't really know why they are in business. It's critical to long-term success to have a solid "why" or purpose for being in business. It might be to have more time freedom to enjoy your family or to secure your financial future, so you can give your time to ministry or charity work. It might be to become the largest contributor to a charity or ministry. Whatever your purpose, it needs to be vibrant enough to keep you going during the tough times. Once you have a solid purpose, then you must determine what needs to happen in order to achieve that purpose – these are called goals and are the stepping stones or road signs along the way toward your purpose. Goals need to be written and reviewed daily. Often goals are too big to determine what to do on a daily basis, so you should break them down into manageable activities called objectives. Start each day by reviewing your purpose, goals, and objectives, then start working on the highest priority objectives and you will quickly reach your goals and achieve your purpose.

 

Power Secret Four: Right Attitudes and Beliefs

 

Many people fail in network marketing because they don't have the right attitude. They treat their business like a hobby, working at it whenever time allows, rather than treating it like a business and scheduling regular time for business activities. I've also encountered many people in network marketing businesses, who show signs that they believe that what they are doing isn't quite on the up and up, which makes it difficult for them to talk with people. Second, is believing in your company and the products/services. Third, is believing in yourself as a network marketing business owner. If your belief is not strong in all three areas, success will elude you.

 

Power Secret Five: Treat it Like a Business, Not a Hobby

 

What does this mean? Most people who enter the network marketing industry have never run a business, so they don't know what it means to treat it like a business. The keys are to first have the right attitude and second the right actions. Network marketing is one of the very few businesses that can be built while still employed at something else. The great part is that you keep your current income, while building another stream, which eventually will replace the first source. However, in order to do that, you must do the things that successful business people do. You must be consistent and persistent with your business and work on the most productive activities every day. Finally, you need to make a long-term commitment to your business. I have to laugh when someone says they'll give it a try for six months or so. I've owned businesses, both network marketing and traditional, for many years and I've yet to find one that would produce a full-time income within six months, while building it on a part-time basis. Yes, some people earn big time income in network marketing within their first six months, but it's because they put in a more than full-time effort or already had a massive circle of influence. For the average person, like me and probably you, it's going to take some time and effort to build your business, but if you do it right for the next few years, you'll never have to worry about money again.

 

Power Secret Six: Have a M.A.P.

 

If you were going to drive your car from Seattle, WA to Orlando, FL, would you just jump on the nearest highway and start driving, in hopes that some day soon you'd reach Orlando? No, that would be ludicrous and yet, that's how most people build a network marketing business. It's a journey and you need a M.A.P., which stands for Marketing Action Plan. This plan will guide you from where you are right now to where you want to go in life. It should include your purpose, goals, objectives, marketing strategies, and a daily plan to implement those strategies. That way, you are always on track toward your goals and purpose.

 

Power Secret Seven: Become a Master Prospector

 

If you were wandering through a field and stumbled across a goldmine, you would immediately buy the lot, purchase digging equipment, and begin to mine the gold. Well, you have stumbled across a goldmine and it's in your network marketing business. The key is to prospect for the gold nuggets among your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, congregation members, people out on the internet, and people you meet out in public. There is a direct relationship between the quantity/quality of prospecting and the amount of money you make, so become a master prospector and watch your income sky rocket.

If you are treating everyone exactly the same, then you're missing the boat with 75% of them. There are four basic personalities and although we operate at times in all four, every person functions primarily in one of the four. Understanding and recognizing the different personalities will increase your sponsoring and retention ratios.
