Marketing On The Internet: Leveling The Playing Field

Marketing On The Internet: Leveling The Playing Field

The days are gone when a company had to have an extraordinarily large budget to become a huge player in the advertisement world.  The advertising mediums ranged from big to bigger.  The little guys on the corner of the street may have been able to scrap together enough funds to finance some ads in the paper, but to make a name for themselves that everyone would know their name was very difficult.  Radio and TV, perhaps, could reach out to large audiences, but are very expensive for large scale campaigns.  The along came the break for "guerrilla marketers" and bootstrappers: the internet.  The internet is always open and consists of an infinite number of alleys which businesses use to market their services.  During the past decade and a half, marketing on the internet has been leveling the playing field for businesses to the point in which one needs only instruction and a few dollars to get a website up and running for their advertising.

Marketing on the internet consists much more of doing marketing the proper way, instead of paying hundreds of thousands of dollars on expensive campaigns and endorsers.  Someone who has a keen knowledge of search engines can create a decently sized business from the confides of his or her own home.  Before the internet, there were relatively few possibilities to start an at home business, but now with the internet, the possibility is there.  This leveling of the playing field can get one's point across as much as the player who has a seven-figure advertising account.

The internet is always on and never goes away.  Regardless of where you are in the world, and what time it is, your website will surely be on to market your product or promotion.  With television and radio, you have to pick what times your ad will air.  Of course, you need to be judicious of when you air it, because with TV, you do not want to be throwing money at something for experimentation when you do not have the capital to facilitate that.  With the internet, you can have customer log in to your website at any time, and you website will not only be there, but contain the same content (unless, of course you set it otherwise, for a promotion, perhaps).  And of course with print ads they are only printed on specific days, with a much more limited amount of advertising space.  Unless you have the capital to write the check.

A new handful of people are making their career of marketing on the internet.  These are people who have taken full advantage of the leveling of the playing field and intimately know about the powers of the internet for the knowledgeable person.  Just think, nothing like this was fathomable a couple of decades ago, and few people thought something that would become the internet would ever come to fruition a generation ago.  Today, with proper techniques of online advertising, a kid in his parents basement can make enough to buy dad a new Mercedes-Benz with a minute, technological investment.

After a few short years, the internet has reached the point of leveling the playing field that it matter more of a company's knowledge and ambition than of a company's advertisement funds.  With social marketing today, one does not even need a website to get his or her own name out on the internet.  Marketing on the internet has made the world that much smaller and has leveled the playing field enough that a photographer from Omaha can reach as many people as a multi-million dollar corporation a few short decades ago.
